This product is fine, the size is suitable for mini lathes.

This trim/split tool is of acceptable quality and is as stiff as it gets for its miniature size. What you say is small, yes it is small, the indexable inserts are also small, and the maximum depth of cut is small, most likely the overall diameter of 1.25 inches can be shared. In addition, the insert is held firmly in the cutter thanks to the clamping force from above, which is adjusted with a single hex screw. Strange, I'm used to torx screws on modern tools. The insert is, well, yes it is an insert and it has positive rake which is good for low powered machines. It's well supported, and unless your lathe isn't sloppy, it'll get the job done with ease. This is the highest quality board I have ever used. Steel shafts so the chipbreaker works when the cut is at the right depth. A 7x10 or 7x14 lathe may not be stiff enough or have the torque required for this depth of cut. My 12x60 does. What I recommend is buying this if you are working with materials that have sufficient hardness. Hat, they're tearing the edge of your HSS splitter tool. Buy this if you have the stiffness and torque to use for higher speeds where carbide shines. Buy this if you can't grind and shape your own splitting tools and you just want to buy the item and use it. Well here's what I did after testing it in factory form. I carefully took it to my diamond grinding wheel, then to my diamond buffing wheel and only sharpened the leading edge until it was very sharp. This has allowed me to keep the Tian coating on the leading edge and where chip flow occurs, thus reducing wear. Sharpening coated tools is always a compromise. Sharpening carbide cutting tools is also a trade off, bring it to the edge of high speed steel and it becomes much more prone to damage, but it also cuts cleaner with less power consumption. The factory edge is adequate, the improved edge is much better for my job where time and finish are more important than tool life. Remember that the stiffness of the carbide is important for holding the workpiece as well as holding the tool. And speed is where you pay off. Carbide allows you to move faster, much faster, which means your project will be completed faster and you have more time for other things. And frankly, the most valuable resource each of us has is time because it cannot be replaced.
