Review on πŸ“» Black Kaito KA200 Pocket AM/FM Radio by Jonathan Clark

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Surprisingly GOOD little pocket radio - - Kudos to Kaito!

I recently left my little Coby transistor radio (which I've had for over a decade) out in the rain overnight and indeed it was adios for it. It was the best radio for $5 but after hearing a lot of good things about the Kaito I decided to order it in black to replace the trusty old Coby. I'm usually listening to old songs and talking on the radio when I'm working outside or taking my daily walk up the hill and thought the Kaito would be a good replacement and it's actually a bit lighter and smaller, perfect for my shirt pocket. Let me tell you, this little guy ROCKS! The secret of EXCEPTIONAL sound quality must be in the speaker (or DSP circuitry, or both), but it's amazing how clear and loud this little radio is. Although the VHF antenna is non-swivel and rather short, that doesn't really matter for such a small radio as all you have to do is null the radio on your station if you need to, and that's always the case with a radio. AM. Sensitivity on both bands is pretty stunning and I was pleasantly surprised to find it picked up stations miles away on AM, much better than the old Coby. FM isn't bad either, but stronger stations tend to overlap and overlap a little when close together, which is normal for these little DSP boys. The vernier scale is also slightly offset, but close enough - who cares about such a small radio? This little powerhouse is no bigger than a credit card and packs a punch. The sound doesn't distort and the batteries seem to last forever. I just can't get over how good this thing sounds and how well constructed and durable it is. Time will tell how long this little radio will last (I'll be more careful not to leave it out in the rain all night), but if I live with it for as many years as I did my old Coby, I'll be one happy camper. . One thing is for sure, radios have come a long way since my first old channel master, All Transistor, back in 1961. Hats off to Kaito! I will be a happy tourist.
