The battery died in 30 minutes

I bought it for my niece for Christmas and it doesn't hold a charge. I'm not happy I bought it hoping she could use it for school but now it won't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes and dies. Now I have to get her a new tablet and feel like I wasted my money on it. She can't even manage a subject they work on in school.
