Review on Bosch DG250C 120 Volt Die Grinder by Jason Lockwood

More Than Just a Grinder

I have a 16" x 24" CNC machine that comes with a Swiss made, German design Kress motor, the rear bearing froze and the rear support destroyed. The replacement was supposed to be shipped from England and cost over $400. As it was early December, delivery time was an issue. My main requirement was a 43mm yoke behind the collet to install it. A call to Bosch tech support ended with them physically measuring one of them at 43.6mm, which was close enough to fit the existing clamping mechanism. So 4 weeks and probably 50 hours of cutting later this tool is working great. I didn't actually measure runout, but everything I cut out fit perfectly. Normally, non-circular parts become large parts. Especially in the hand, this grinder runs very smoothly and is quieter than my previous Kress. Hearing protection was mandatory on the Kress, but not so much on the DG250C. The Kress and DG250C actually look very similar from a few feet away and I really wonder if there is any overlap between the design teams. The switch is a bit quirky at first, but you quickly get used to it. You slide it and then press on one end to lock it. On the CNC it never leaves the lock position. It doesn't have speed control, but the price and the fact that it's a grinder is probably common. I intend to purchase an aftermarket speed controller: Super-PID v2 Closed-Loop Speed Control to interface with my CNC. The sale went through Bosch CPO and was shipped the next business day and was in my hands 3 days later. I paid for better shipping because of a vacation. Only one 1/4" collet is supplied and Bosch phone support can't provide any specifics on this. I will be purchasing an extra one to send to a place that sells precision aftermarket collets for measurement. I should have also like a 1/8" collet like the ones from Kress for engraving attachments. Kress had 1/4" and 1/8".
