Overall I am very happy with this purchase. These side tables are a great option at a reasonable price. If you look closely, the upper is clearly faux wood and looks more like plastic, but I had that expectation and I agree. As you can see from the picture of the ring, using a stand is a must for ANY heat or the plastic will melt. They are not very strong and can easily topple over if hit. However, I love the look of them and how easy they are to pick up and carry to where you need them. I wish I had known about using the stand from the start, but other than that I'm very happy with it.
