I liked that it was closed. I didn't buy it to use as a tray. If you're using it as a tray, cleaning it seems like a chore. I bought this as an outdoor cat house for my outdoor cat. It will be easy to clean and replace the cat bed as I don't have to do it every day like a litter box. I keep my cat in a very large wire dog cage on the porch at night to keep her away from predators and other stray cats. So I put that in her enclosure as a home. It's perfect for her. She enjoys sitting on it, looking around and napping during the day if the box is left open, so I know she loves it. Your small round cat bed will fit perfectly inside and protect them from the wind. I didn't put a swing door in, but if it gets colder I could help keep the house warm. It's thin plastic so there's no insulation, but I can cover it with aluminum foil and cardboard if it gets cold. I live on the south coast so it doesn't usually freeze. I can reinforce it by taping the seam at the join to give it extra strength. Overall I think it will last a long time for what I use it for.
