I live in San Antonio where the water is some of the hardest. Seriously, someone came to test our water and explained that 1.0-3.5 is slightly hard, 3.5-7.0 is moderately hard, 7.0-10.5 is hard, that is anything, anything over 10.5 is very harsh. Our water was rated 18! I moved here from New Jersey, which has magical waters that make you feel like you're bathing in silk, so this water damaged my hair and skin. I kept telling my SO that we need a water softener, but he grew up in Texas and didn't notice the difference (until he came to New Jersey with me and tried our magic water). We bought this as a compromise as we couldn't afford a water softener and I noticed a difference in my first shower, it's not New Jersey water but I no longer smell like I swam in a pool when I get out of the I take a shower and my skin and hair seem less dry. Because our water is so hard I think the filters will need to be changed for a fraction of their lifespan, but it's still cheaper than a water softener.
