Well I paid. Reference Marantz SACD players went down in price one, two, three, and then I splurged. It's been a very long time, 1990's to be exact, the last time I bought a specific CD player that I have that still works great. But I knew there had been many improvements over the last forty years. In my day I didn't really like CDs that didn't have the musicality of my old record collection. I fell in love with laserdiscs and then hated DVDs like a deserted lover, but I took Blu-ray well. I missed SACD and fell in love with her. If this Marantz player was only for CDs I wouldn't buy it. But since getting it, I'm only now discovering the brilliance inherent in the CD format. Coincidentally, a large box of Rampal flute records arrived the same week as the turntable. I've always found CD flute music too harsh - and I'm a flute player - so I was shocked when I put the first Rampal CD into the new turntable. I am now more than halfway through the big box and have almost sinfully enjoyed the experience. I once had a large collection of Rampal records, I got the sheet music of some of these pieces and played them in concert. It's just wonderful to listen to them at their best. I tried out a few sets of CDs and SACDs I hadn't liked before and re-evaluated what I used to call "music from hell". Everything in my marriage bunch needs a new hearing. So far there has been one entry that also turned out to be not very good on a new machine. So this new machine can't turn bad records into good ones, but it can make good ones better. I'm glad I have the silver chassis because it sets the car apart from the wall of my listening room. I hope that I have enough time in my silver years to benefit from a new player. Criticism? One wonders why CD-Text is only available on SACDs and not on the CDs that have the encoding. Considering the total cost, how much more expensive would CD Text for CDs be? However, I'd rather listen to music on this new machine than look at the lyrics on another.
