Great idea. I wish I could think about it. I can confirm other complaints about misfits on 2" PVC pipe. I decided to sand down the outside of the PVC pipe instead of the taillight adapter. Replacing would be cheaper. Another downside is that they only come in two-inch tube sizes. My trailer rails are 1 1/2". I'm sure there are many others the same size. I had to use a 2 by 1 1/2 coupler. Another downside is that there is no built in path for the ground wire to leave the fitting to attach to the mounting stud on the lantern Many flashlights are configured to use a stud as ground.
