Review on πŸ”Œ MakerHawk USB 3.0 Tester: Advanced Meter for USB Power, Voltage, and Current Analysis - AT34 by Jeho Odor

Bluetooth and lots of features at an affordable price

The main reason for this purchase was to test a few USB cables I have and get rid of the bad ones. The second reason was to test battery usage under different conditions. The manual is computer translated from Chinese so it's a bit difficult to understand at first, but once you read it you'll get the hang of it. There is a cable differential test that works well, but it's a two-step process. I've found that the quickest (one-step process) is to simply plug the cable under test into the input side of the tester and wiggle the ends while charging a powerful device like a tablet from the output side. If you see a drop in voltage and current at the same time, the cable is defective. Current, voltage, power and watt-hour measurements are very useful to determine battery usage. I do this using a desktop program via Bluetooth, then I export the data and create an XLS chart. The picture shows an example of this for my GoPro Hero 7 Black camera. Units of time are not defined, but I used a stopwatch for 20 seconds idle, 40 seconds recording, and 20 seconds idle. In other words, 100 units were recorded in 80 seconds. I didn't try the phone app because it was giving too many warnings in my malware/virus app. I think this is due to some links to dubious foreign websites and the lack of a certified Google Play app. The desktop malware/virus scan ran fine on Windows 10. I tried reading the internal shunt resistor with the VOM but its resolution only went down to 0.1 ohms and showed nothing. So my guess is somewhere between 0.01 but no more than 0.1. I tested a heavy 2A battery charge for an hour and nothing got hot.
