Worst controller I've ever seen

Worst controller I've ever seen other than Areca, 3ware or Adaptec. I needed a SATA III connection for a Samsung 850 EVO 120GB 2.5" SATA III for my dad's computer and he didn't want to spend much so we bought him this. This card performed poorly at just above a SATA connection, giving us 180MB/s when connected to an 850 EVO SSD. I/O was in 16K reads at 4K when the queue depth was 64 threads. On the shot it was in 7K. After testing everything with it, I decided to use it on a 500GB SATA II hard drive. It worked fine but the SSD doesn't work. I cannot recommend this controller to anyone who wants to install an SSD on this card. I placed the SSD on an Intel ICH9 controller on a SATA II board and the SSD saturated the connection as intended. We then ran the tests again and it worked exactly as intended. The ICH9 boot time for his system was less than 7 seconds. When the SSD was plugged into Crest's IO port, it booted in 37 seconds. I have Marvell controllers on 2 motherboards and they all work fine with SSD but this one sucks, not sure if it's a design issue or something but it looks like it. difficult to communicate with fast SSD drives. Note: My dad's computer is a microtower and his MB only has 2 SATA II ports and we needed a 3rd or I would have sent it back.

Pros
  • Supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ)
Cons
  • Not everything fits
