Review on πŸƒ Garmin Forerunner 405 with Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) and USB Connectivity: Stay Fit and Connected by Louis Loebis

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Stick with update 305. Bad and wrong.

Although the 405 is vastly superior to the 305 in looks, weight, and satellite location, I've found two fatal flaws in this office that are significantly inferior to the older version of Forerunner: 1. Diligent accuracy. I've tried this in two different places, both of which are good controlled experiments. First place was at an IAAF accredited race I attended last Sunday where the clock was over 1% behind on a perfectly straight route (out and back in a sparsely populated city). What's problematic in this case is that most of the slip occurred in the first mile (I thought I was running 30 seconds a mile even though I was fast out of the gate). The second location was in a nearby parking loop. The 305 clocks this lap at exactly 1.30 miles per lap, while the 405 clocks it somewhere between 1.20 and 1.30 miles per lap (and ends up falling short). I know Garmin will claim both measurements are within error, but the 405 is significantly inferior to the 305 in this regard.2. Not suitable for light rain. As other reviewers point out, the bezel is no longer man-worked when wet. But even light RAINDROPS will work on a wet bezel (we're talking light London rain, by the way, not a tropical storm). Raindrops repeatedly changed the screen during my run, switching from "Training" to "Settings" and "History" - and my wet hands couldn't undo the changes. You can lock the screen, but it's difficult to do so while driving - and you basically have to reconcile the fact that just because of a little rain, you can't freely change things.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • will be added later
