Review on Enhanced Klipsch Reference S4 In-Ear Headphones (No Longer Manufactured) by Lukundo Lim

Great headphones with a small caveat

I abuse headphones. They're wrapped around devices and stuffed in my pockets everywhere I go. I almost always listen to music, so they are always with me when I'm not at home. I've had both more expensive IEMs and cheaper IEMs, but I always go back to the S4. I'll spare everyone the technical details and analysis as other reviewers have already done so and other sites dig deeper into the audio specs than I have room for here. Bottom line, they sound great, especially after a week or two of consistent use. These are the most convenient IEMs in their price range (and in fact, the most convenient IEMs in the hundreds of dollars price range). They have excellent but not cloudy bass, good mids and highs. A word of caution for this particular model. I used to have 3 pairs of regular Image S4s but my abuse mentioned above resulted in the cable always failing after about a year. Enter the S4 link. Despite a slight improvement in sound quality (better bass and a bit more clarity throughout the EQ), the main thing is the cable. It's basically a standard IEM or headphone cable, but it's wrapped in a thin tube to protect it from kinking and everyday use, which tends to compromise weak points in headphone cables. Sounds great, but a side benefit of the tubular design is that the cable never fully detaches and loosens like normal cables. By that I mean it keeps the shape of the last position it was in. So if you wrap it around your music player and then unfold it to use, maybe it could curl up or twist a little instead of relaxing and straightening up. If you're like me, you don't care because the durability and improvement in sound quality over the S4 is worth the trade-off. However, it can get annoying at times. So if that's really important to you then the S4 is at a similar price point and a great option for range too. For the inevitable comparison that arises when you look for IEMs in this price range, they're 1,000 times better than Sennheiser's CX series.

  • Great for me
