There are one-way valves that let your breath out the sides. So if you're buying them hoping to control COVID, you'll need to buy earplugs that don't have breathing holes or wear a surgical mask underneath. There is also a break-in period when the masks are not comfortable or do not fit your face, after which they work perfectly. Keep in mind that they are designed for the average adult so are not suitable for children or those of small stature and will be a little tight for later individuals.
