I have been sending my granddaughters (out of state) various doll/house configurations to my granddaughters for several years and they have enjoyed them over time. They also love the little stuffed animals I sent. When I recently came across Calico Critters I thought it would be a small/special selection for my granddaughters' visit. I tried one little thing at a time to see how the quality was until I realized it was time to go a little bigger. I bought this set from the Grand Dept Store. Shop - with discount! (plus the restaurant with everything in it) and then filled the room with creatures and furniture of my choosing. I'll probably buy another house or shop before I'm done, and maybe a car or two. I will also be sending my granddaughters some animals soon to introduce them to these little cuties because I'm sure they love to put little animal friends in their bags when they go out, to kindergarten or just for that around the house etc. not to mention playing with them and reading to them and tucking them under pillows or blankets before bed. so damn cute, and it's hard not to oversell, but I'm not completely crazy yet. I really like the Victorian style of these shops and the furniture that goes with them. The interchangeability I was expecting isn't really there based on the photos I've seen in my searches, but most reviews are great for durability and I really like the looks. Currently "my" entire Calico Town House/Store set sits on a coffee table in my neo-Victorian living room, waiting to meet my granddaughters. I don't actually play often, but I have fun plans for all of it! Confession: After wanting to own a Victorian "dolls house" for half a century, this is actually my first home. I used (shoe boxes or) bookshelves as a child and for my daughters. PS The box it comes in is big and pretty - it will make a GREAT Christmas gift.
