It's rigid but pliable. The top can be rotated, tilted and tightened in the desired position for more accurate alignment. You will need to attach it to something strong so that it doesn't wobble when you use your desk as any wobble will be amplified due to the nature of such attachment. I'm not sure what the fabric around the clip is for. I have some regrets about my purchase, not because the product is bad, but because I was hoping for something that would allow me to easily rotate the camera between two 90 degree positions. It works for this, but I'd be better off with a regular tripod or something totally rigid. This is perfect for positioning your camera in a way that would be difficult with any other type of mount. Although it can be bent, getting it exactly where you want it is not easy. So you don't want to repeatedly rotate it back and forth and then expect it to return to the exact position it was in before.
