I don't usually like collars and my trainer doesn't recommend them. For day walks we use a regular leash attached to a collar. However, at night, after dark, my husband walks the dog in our large, fenced yard rather than letting him roam free (trying to find a dog distracted by night noise is a headache). To that end, we're conveniently holding on to the back door, and I know he won't turn away. The leash is a thick cord, but don't be fooled by the fact that it's indestructible. We had two very similar leashes similar to this one which my dog chewed through in minutes. So stay away from your dog when you are not using it, especially if your dog likes to chew.
