Review on SHIMANO PD-EH500 Dual-sided Urban Cycling Pedal for Touring and Daily Riding by Chad Gue

Almost perfect travel pedals for commuters

I've been driving 4 miles to work and 12 miles home to workout for about 10 years. I used the revered Shimano PD-A530 on my Raleigh Detour Deluxe. I recently built a touring bike (using an old Trek Jetta steel frame) and wanted similar pedals as I often switch from cycling shoes to regular shoes. They were new and a lot cheaper than the A530 but what struck me was the set screws they use as pins on the flat side of the pedal to increase grip on the soles of your regular shoes. Pros: • Color – The pedal generally matches the black color of my Trek. • Clamp strength – I don't need it. Keep shoes very tight because I'm constantly pedaling on and off. The clamps on my old A530 can be adjusted to the point of panic. I will replace them with these and keep the A530 until I have a serious mountain bike. Right now they are set to MAX tightness and it's about the same tightness as the A530 on my other bike. • Increased lateral support of the platform with adjusting screws. That was a big advantage for me. I've slipped off the flat side of the A530 more than once. This improvement makes these pedals perfect in my opinion. Disadvantages: • Color - pedal not entirely black. It's more of a very dark (midnight) blue. It's just a picky complaint. • Resilience. If you're a serious mountain biker or road builder who prefers SPDs because the shoes are easier to walk on and you need something that grips, this isn't for you. Clamp tension reaches its maximum long before the panic-inducing pull. • Important details are missing - that's why I didn't give five stars. The set screws that were supposed to fill the 16 threaded holes, making them act as traction spikes, WERE NOT INCLUDED. I am not alone in this as other reviewers have also stated that their pedals did not come with set screws (aka set screws). Luckily I work as a forklift mechanic and have friends in the application industry so I bought them myself. If you don't have enough of these or need spares, use an M4 x 0.80 set screw (4mm diameter with 0.8mm pitch between threads). I don't know how long the included set screws should be, but I chose the 6mm length because you can tighten the screw so it doesn't dangle and protrudes far enough from the surface to provide a good bite for the shoe better grip. Overall I'm very happy with these pedals, but to be honest I'm a bit disappointed that they don't include any adjustment screws.
