A packet of pearls = 1/2 cup or 24 teaspoons 1 teaspoon of pearls soaked in water = makes 3 cups of pearls fully hydrated 1-1/2 inch from tip). I put 1 teaspoon of pearls in the water and after 5 hours the vase was full of pearls. It definitely doesn't take 3 cups of water (I'm guessing you might only need 1 1/2 cups of water) to grow the balls, but the balls stayed intact when I poured them into a colander to drain the water. It doesn't matter if you add too much water to the beads, but when I tried to put the beads back in the vase after straining, I struggled to keep them from splattering all over the place because they are so light and springy . This product 5 stars because I had no problems with the product and it met my expectations.
