You may only want to block one side of the cage. You can easily use it as you like. The top is a separate item. It is attached with Velcro. The lid is not see-through so she seemed comforted that the first day we brought our chicks home we could only take off the top for lighting. We placed a heated perch and the included heater on the side of the cage and the lid kept the heat in very well. It was also in a large flight cage. The versatility of this case is worth it.
