Review on πŸš™ Rugged Ridge 11210.17 Jeep Wrangler JK Hood Catch Kit - Textured Black (07-18) by Scott Spoja

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Looks good, works good - but aren't they peeling the paint off your hood?

Pros: They really look great. They also keep the hood secure, which is important for safety. They're really strong and won't rot when dry like factory hood latches. Disadvantages: the first and most unpleasant. The top rear corner of the cam arm (the part that hooks into the hood mounted bracket) is *VERY* close to the hood when the latch is closed. You can't squeeze a credit card in between. I don't know yet if this will be an issue or not - hopefully engine and road vibrations aren't causing the camshaft lever to rub against the hood. If so, I'll most likely just put some sort of clamp or something on the hood at a spot just below the cam lever. Or I'll have to file the cam lever a bit. I docked a star because it even raises concerns. Second, the instructions must specify (written) or show (illustrated) the use of washers behind nuts that fasten in the hood and fender. Seems intuitive, I know. But if you include them, shouldn't you show/mention them in the guide? Lastly (no stars deducted), I think the textured black and satin black versions would look better if they came with black hardware. Not a big deal, except those *black* hood latches are now the only shiny thing on the front of my jeep. I've considered replacing the black hardware, but the threaded tension rod and locknuts will still be shiny, so. however. I think it's awesome. Bottom line: let's face it - they really aren't needed unless your stock hood latches are rotten. Again, how many things do we do with our Jeeps that are "essential"? And if your stock fasteners are really rotten, you can simply replace them with another set of factory fasteners. But they look good, work very well and don't rot. Before I say yes, buy this, I'll drive a few hundred miles to make sure they don't strip the paint off my hood.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Boring packaging
