Let me first say that I have a lot of respect for Sennheiser. I consider them one of the best manufacturers of audiophile headphones - even the gold standard for many consumers. I have an HD 650, IE 800 and S660 (one of the best USB headsets for business). I've owned about a dozen other Sennhesier headphones over the last 20 years. They were (and are) my first brand for a long time. I own other high quality headsets such as the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro and have used and sold high quality Shure and Grado models. So this review is from someone who has researched high-end consumer audio gear. I had high hopes for this amp. I used a Beyerdynamic MMX300 headset (which is currently considered the best consumer gaming headset out there in terms of sound quality and microphone quality) and a Razer Thresher Ultimate 7.1 headset. Both sound significantly better on my Alienware M17 laptop with built-in 3.5mm jack than on the Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO. By "much better" I mean the difference between day and night. I used Dolby surround sound and YouTube's Dolby 7.1 sound tests (yes, I know YouTube reduces sound quality with their codecs). I was happy to do a quick test as soon as I received this Sennheiser amp. What I heard disappointed me. The Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO had a smaller soundstage and less separation. My Alienware created a much more realistic 3D environment than the GSX 1200 PRO. The difference between day and night. Didn't really notice any separation from the GSX 1200 PRO (I was shocked). The sound quality was much better than my Alienware. Better clarity, better fidelity, and better balance of high, mid, and low with Alienware. I spent about 30 minutes searching the internet to find out if I missed any settings. I have installed the Sennheiser Updater and the latest firmware. No difference. I also couldn't get my mics to work with the Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO amp. I've adjusted all my settings in Windows 10, Audacity and Skype to try and get any microphone sound. I was only able to connect a headset directly to the GSX 1200 PRO's mic input, but the volume was low. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't plan to spend any more time trying to figure it out. go back!
