I bought this as a gift for my 6 year old daughter and she loves it. However, she does not use it for its intended purpose. She found countless ways to use chains, hooks and clips. Among her best chain ideas: - An improvised dog leash. - Support for doll tents. - An imaginary anaconda. - Different hanging supports used in different imaginary games. She also used brackets and hooks to build a fort for herself and her brothers using her bunk bed. They provide better anchor attachment than the books previously used. Our chain is strong enough. I see one person answering questions about the chain by saying their chain broke under the weight of the baby dolls and I wonder what stuffed animals they attached to break the chain. The one we bought, despite being plastic, has withstood a lot more abuse than I expected, especially when used as a tent support (with a blanket draped over it). Also, some people say you can make it cheaper and more durable by buying online from a hardware store. Well, I guess the "stronger" part is true enough, but the clips and hooks are better constructed than anything you'll find at Home Depot in under an hour. There may be something that you can assemble, but it will take a lot of time to put together and paint to make it look consistent. You can also just go with this set unless you plan on hanging all the 6ft teddy bears you won at the fair. We love this set and plan to buy one for our friend's child when they reach the same age.
