I bought this unit from Amazon two months ago. At first I thought the block worked fine. It rarely jams, seems fast, and scans well. Until the device started scanning black pages from the first page. After Brother made a service request and spent over an hour on the phone troubleshooting, they decided to escalate the issue to a higher level of technical support. In the meantime the apparatus was working again, I thought it had healed. Then it stopped scanning the first page again. Having finally spoken to John at Brother this morning, this intermittent issue of the first party not scanning is still unresolved. His solution, which is unacceptable to me, is that we have to wait for it to stop working again. By the way, this has happened several times. He pointed out that only 1 in 100 cases of this type of error occurs sporadically and usually when this error occurs it is permanent. So he clearly stated that this mistake SOMETIMES happens to me. But instead of replacing the item in a good way, he wants me to wait for him and closely watch every scan I run. I'm about to to digitize our office and go through hundreds of pages every day. It's mostly discouraging, but also eye-opening. I thought Brother was a reliable company that would support their products. Obviously not! Unfortunately they lost a customer. This partially broken scanner is now sitting in a closet and will most likely never see the light of day. I replaced it with a FUJITSU ScanSnap ix1500. If you have time to play around with a machine of questionable quality and poor customer service, you SHOULD buy this machine. If you have hours to waste and intend to keep an eye on your device, then this scanner is for you. If you are like me and probably most other consumers and your time is valuable, I would suggest spending a few dollars more or even the same amount and staying away from BROTHER PRODUCTS. That the manufacturer boldly refuses to provide warranty service is doubtful at best. Goodbye brother, hello Fujitsu.
