Update: yes square velcro yes square worn out! I ended up buying industrial strength velcro to add to keep it attached. The glue on it is so strong it just sticks to the old velcro. After paying $3.50 for a new velcro, a stronger velcro may not be that expensive to add to a product from the start. And more than an inch. It's great for the gym and on my mountain bike. The only thing I could like is that the strap could be a little longer, maybe a couple of inches. But the last brand I bought was too long and the velcro wore out in less than a year.
