I'm the head chef on a competitive grill team. In competition, maintaining exact chicken temperature can make a difference in juiciness over less juicy meat and prevent you from finishing in the top 10. But most home cooks don't need that kind of precision. That's where this thermometer comes in. I checked the calibration manually (there was only a 0.3 degree deviation) to make sure we started calibrating. I ran 3 tests on this thermometer and compared the readings to my $100 M4 thermometer in room temperature water. Both readings are within 0.5 degrees of each other. 2- in freshly cooked chicken breast. Within 1 degree 3- in the brisket on the remainder counter. Within 1.3 degrees. Meat samples were taken using the same hole at the same depth, with the second probe inserted immediately after removing the first. In my opinion. For $15, this thermometer is excellent value. It has a little fewer frills than the more expensive ones, but then again. 15 dollars! What I really want from a portable meat thermometer is accuracy, the ability to fit in an apron pocket, and a quick temperature reading. This device did all of those things. Without knowing what long-term durability is, I can't say it will outlive my much more expensive thermal pen, but at this price point, does that matter? I have no problem recommending this thermometer to anyone who needs it on a budget. In fact, I have a friend who is just asking for ideas on how to get her husband for Father's Day. It will be perfect for you. I will keep this device in my kitchen drawer and use it for cooking without hesitation.
