Our cat tore the corners of our old sofa so I got them when we restored it and they still work for him. I think cats have different scratching habits. This cat liked to scratch the old fabric in the corners where it walked over the wooden supports in the back corners of the sofa; other parts of the sofa do not interest him (yet!). So I put them where he scratched the old couch just to avoid damaging the new couch, although he might not like the new fabric anyway - he's picky and wouldn't use a scratching post. One thing I would like to know before ordering is that each protector has the listed measurements (18" x 4.5"), however the picture of the item (at least at the time of publication) shows a protector fitted around the corner is tight. So for our sofa I had to use two protectors for each corner - one on each side of each corner - because this cat was concentrating on a larger area on each side of the corner. The spiral needles also worked great on our sofa, but the needle heads are frosted so they're not as discreet as the clear plastic of the protectors themselves. It's not critical to me, but they are noticeable. But overall a good product and I am ordering more for our other sofa.
