The light switch is unscrewed with a screw, the extension cable plugged in, screwed on again, done. I did NOT buy it for a child. I bought this for my DISABLED mother who has trouble raising her arms and coordinating the flick of the switch. THIS product worked great. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS if you too have a disabled or handicapped relative who is having trouble accessing light switches. There is a small lip at the end of the extension that can be used to lower or raise. It glides easily and requires little effort. I don't know who wants to give their little ones access to the light sooner than possible, because they are terrorists who turn off the lights,
