I think it should be decorative, not functional.
The pen tip started to crumble on the second use. It was a late Christmas present, she had it for two weeks. She used it once to review it and a few days later she was doing her homework and it started falling apart. It was not mishandled due to the rough texture of the handle, which gave no indication of whether it had been damaged in transit. A very sad woman.
