We have had an old model frog for years and to fill it you turn the frog's head upside down and hold his eyes and face in your other hand while you pour water into the soil . On this newer model, you can now remove the top, which is just a plastic cosmetic finish, and reveal a carry handle. A curious child can take off the top cover and see the steam coming out of the humidifier before passing through the top holes, but it is not dangerous for them to put the cover back on as it is only a decorative top cover . a part that doesn't seem to have a locking system. We also have a dragon humidifier in our kids room and it works just as amazingly as this owl in ours. (I'm posting this review there too) **My only complaint is that the green light that glows when the humidifier is on is so bright I had to wrap tape around it to keep it from glowing. Hold me when I sleep as I am very sensitive to light.
