We couldn't use our fanless gas magazine because we hate the smell of burnt air. We are sensitive to that. We went to a shop that specializes in fireplace inserts and talked about expensive conversions, including completely converting the FPL for outdoor ventilation. When we looked at electric FPLs, they gave a lot of credit for their performance. I saw this inexpensive unit at Revain and then called a plumber to shut off the gas. The total bill from the plumber was about $200. I took this a step further and installed an outlet in the FPL and it cost $325 more but with baskets mounted to the sides of the FPL we really hid the cord so I'm not sure how much others did will add these costs. Is an electric fireplace ideal? Well, for us yes, because we can't use the gas magazine. does it look real no Does the gas log look like a real fire? no You get used to it. This device makes a crackling sound that is quite real. There will be no gas. We wear almost every night. You see it out of the corner of your eye and after a while, with a crackle, you might prefer to gas. Don't expect much heat. We have high ceilings and don't care about the heating element. It makes no sense. Maybe this will help if your room is small. It's just a small heater with heating coils. But we love it. That was our decision.
