That's a really good thing if you're traveling or have a kid in the hostel. Door alarms are mostly made of plastic with a metal trigger on the top. They have a non-slip rubber floor. I've tried this on three different floor surfaces and no slipping. I've also tried three doors of different heights and it worked every time. Although they are mostly made of plastic, they appear to be relatively well made. There are four batteries included in the box, not including the 9V batteries you need. In the battery compartment, I would downgrade them. It's very tight. In fact, they made me realize that not all 9V battery sizes are created equal. A Duracell Dura 9V block battery will do, but an Energizer 9V battery will not. It's just too long. Make sure you buy the correct battery for the hole. I found the door stop sensitivity to be pretty accurate. There is high, medium and low sensitivity. The decibel volume is much higher than I expected. You can certainly hear it throughout the house. When the alarm goes off, there is no timer to turn it off. You need to go to the doorstop and turn it to the off position. If you travel regularly and stay in hotels, this is an extra sense of security to pack in your bag.
