The chain did not retract properly on its own so I had to pull very hard to turn the light on or off. I thought I'd have to replace the entire fan until I found out I could just replace it. It was very easy to install and now I can pull with normal strength. I just watched it on Youtube. He took out the lightbulbs and the glass around them. I unscrewed the part of the fan where the string of lights was. The wiring quickly came loose, allowing me to mount the new switch on a table rather than a stepladder. Two wires connected. Reconnected the wiring harness and tested it with a lightbulb before putting everything back together. I should have paid a little more attention to the color as my original chain was a bit darker, but that's only noticeable on close inspection.
