I have purchased 12 inch coasters (which appear to be out of stock at the moment) but I assume the finish and quality match. I used some yoga blocks but my cat decided he likes to chew on the blocks (he likes soft ones) and this caused my speakers to fall on the floor. So I buy them as they are not that attractive to my cat. However, stalls are more attractive to humans, although I imagine you have to be very hungry to want to chew them. :) They were packed in that super cheap styrofoam that always leaves a mess with little bits being flung all over the place due to static electricity. But the packaging protects them well. Assembly was easy - 8 large screws went into the pre-drilled holes for each stand. Only one of the 16 holes fell off very slightly when tightened, the rest fitted well. I ended up with 4 extra screws and 8 large and 8 smaller felt leg stickers to use on the bottom of the stands. Wood - MDF with wood and leather veneer. They look good enough from a few feet away, but when you get closer than 3 feet or less it becomes pretty obvious that this is a cheap veneer. MDF is definitely better than chipboard and I'm sure if it were hardwood they would be more expensive, but the top/bottom base is coated that way too and I'm a little worried about how well they hold up over time. To be honest, They seem a bit pricey for this level of quality, but these were the only stands I could find for my bookshelf speakers for my 12" desk. In the end, both speaker stands were filled with a total of 10 pounds of sand—actually the ideal amount. So I'd rate 5 pounds of sand for 6 inches of height if you're that inclined. The only really annoying thing is that the top of the base is also bolted to the top of the column, you can see the tips of the rather large wood screws. My 4" bookshelf speakers cover the screws well as long as I'm sure I've placed the speaker in the center of the stand.
