Worked on Old Holsclaw Trailer

I don't leave long reviews but I learned a few things that might be useful to someone. I have an early 70's Holsclaw trailer towing a 12 foot V bow aluminum boat. I am currently towing a lighter vehicle and have noticed a lot of trailer tongue movement which I can now feel in the car. 2. A tire on the driver's side was out of round and wearing unevenly. Replaced the tire and found the new one started to do the same.3. The springs are original (as are the shock absorbers) and would be difficult to replace and probably expensive. Conclusion: I have to replace the shock absorbers. Gabriel's original shock absorbers are no longer manufactured. I found a few people using these shocks as replacements and they were happy so I decided to give it a try. The Monroe didn't compress a shock by 8.25 inches and lengthened it by 12 inches. That's 8.625 and 12.75. Monroe also has a 5752 autoshock at 8.625 and 12.75 and was slightly cheaper at Homedepot. Bulldog has HD1213-0676 which is 8.74 and 12.56. It was the cheapest but not a household name. I installed this shock absorber 555002 and ordered 5752 for myself for the future. 555002 is not yellow but black. I painted it Rustoleum Ford Blue to match my trailer. It is best to do this when it is not on a trailer and is clean :). There are three possible shock mounting holes on a Holsclaw trailer, each adding an inch to the distance between the axle and the frame, and it turns out there must be a reason. The original shock had 3.75 inches of travel and 8.25 inches of compression. That travel is 4.125 inches and compresses 8.625, so I attached the top of the shock to the second hole and added an extra inch of clearance. Yes, they also only give you one set of screws and suggest using one of the original screws for the other end. A 2.5ft breaker bar was required to remove the original bolts. Not just to get divorced, but to the end! No way would I use the original screw. Due to the design, I would never remove the screw set that came with the damper without cutting it off. I highly recommend paying $7 for the bolt and getting Dorman help! Shock Bolt Kit 31001. This makes it very easy to reinstall the shock absorbers and to easily remove them again in the future if they wear out. Great design and quality! I suggest installing the bolts on the axle and frame first, then spraying the bolts with silicone spray, pressing the top of the shock until the bolt just goes through, then pressing the bottom of the shock down and over the bolt to push. I used a 3/4" socket to put a damper on each bolt. Took a few minutes to install. It was God's advice and it never fails. Thank God! The trailer drives much better, barely moving and I expect my tires to last longer Everything is fine!
