Unitek's USB to IDE and Sata converter saves lives! The device works great and easily retrieves data from the hard drive, a task that can cost hundreds of dollars if done professionally. What great value! Warning: This device does not repair a damaged hard drive. It is intended to be used when the hard drive is intact but the computer motherboard is damaged or burned out and the computer will not boot. Instructions are not included with the converter, but they are not really needed either. To make the device easier to use, I recommend removing the hard drive from your desktop or laptop first. It is difficult, if not impossible, to connect a device to a hard drive when the hard drive is still installed in the computer. With a desktop computer, ejecting a drive is easy. Most desktop hard drives are mounted in a case frame. Simply remove the screws that hold the cage to the case, then press the lever that attaches the cage to the case to the wall. The cage appears. There are many videos on YouTube showing how to do it. It takes about 30 seconds to finish. The hard drive does not have to be removed from the recycle bin. Laptops may take a little longer. You'll probably have to remove the back of the laptop - 8 or 10 screws - to access the hard drive. Once open, all you have to do is unclip it and pull it out. After pulling out the hard drive, find the matching connector on the converter (there are 3 available) and connect it to the IDE or SATA connector on the hard drive. Connect the power cord to the inverter and turn it on. Turn on the power switch on the back of the inverter. The blue indicator lights up. Now connect the included USB cable to the converter and connect the other end to a working computer. The old hard drive will appear as a new external drive on your working computer. Select it and an explorer window will open. Typically, you go to the "Users" section and locate the user whose files you need to save. You'll see all the default folders - Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Music - just like you did in the original computer's File Explorer. Copy and paste some or all of the folders or files you want to restore to the new computer. That's all! I even used Unitek converter to transfer files from Windows formatted hard drive to Mac. Works great! Please note that the Unitek website is not of much help if you do not speak Korean. But help with the documentation isn't really needed. This is a really simple DIY project that will save your data and potentially save you time, money, and hassle. Extremely simple and effective! I'm so happy I bought the Unitek inverter!
