The top edge of the blade is powder coated and does not need to be sharpened. Also, the silkscreen on the top edge of the blade is offset, meaning 0 to 1 inch is actually 15/16 by 1 inch, so I'll be measuring from the 1 mark as if it's zero. Leather is generally not very accurate, but it would be nice if the instrument manufacturer bothered to do a little quality control. It's good as an angle, but not as a measuring tool. I ordered Starrett, I suspect there will be no such problems. This was gifted to garden tools at the moment. I like the size compared to the full size square frame
