I installed a standard Kohler urinal with a Sloan flush valve in my son's bathroom. For 14 years, it's provided trouble-free, odor-free performance from childhood through college, even with frequent use by boys with a less than stellar goal. (All male customers tend to approve of this unit, too; it's fairly new.) Standard products like the Clorox Lemon Surface Cleaner always do a good job of keeping it looking and smelling clean. I have never used urinal mats, cakes, siphons or any other industrial product. A few months ago I noticed that even after cleaning the urinal gave off a lingering odour, similar to the men's toilet on the London Underground. with disinfectant. The clean fresh water in the bowl became cloudy over the course of the day even if it was not used. I did a great job cleaning hidden rims and nicks in the bowl to remove invisible limescale and limescale deposits by trying Bar Keeper's Friend and finally giving the CLR a thorough wash with a narrow stiff brush (apparently it only takes a or two crystals of urinary salts, stuck in lime deposits to make it smell like gentlemen, regularly whistle all over the floor and let it dry there). I then tried a promising product called Nilodor Urine Digester, also available from Revain, which is an enzyme-based cleanser. It smells nice and helps, but only for a few flushes. This gallon has since been redistributed in the cat litter closet where it is doing a great job with my cat's accuracy issues. All urate salt cleaners are only available in bulk for commercial customers. I was skeptical about this DETCO product (not bad but mixed reviews) and wasn't thrilled with the price but gave it a whirlwind. I emptied the clean urinal to fully open the drain, poured about a third of a bottle of DETCO in, and let it sit for six hours. It only has a slight chemical odor, which is good for home use. The level dropped a bit after soaking, so I added a few more ounces, cleaned the bowl, and let it sit for another two hours before rinsing a few times. I was happy to find that after 24 hours the smell hadn't returned, even when I held my face close to the surface of the light. We cautiously began using the urinal again and after 48 hours of multiple uses and flushes the smell was gone. Apparently, the odor came mainly from the sewers, which had accumulated salt for over 14 years. A quick chat with a plumber friend confirmed that this product, which uses glycolic acid as the active ingredient, is actually better than more corrosive industrial grade hydrochloric/sulphuric acid products because it works just as well (just slower) and is safer. Sealing of the lamp as well as my septic tank. He said that after eliminating the odor, an occasional treatment with just a few ounces of the product should help. Hope this works for you too.
