To cover the head and protect the hair and helmet. I have a medium sized head and it barely reaches my hairline. Every time you take your helmet off it falls off because it's so small. I haven't had this problem with others so thought I'd mention it. It seems well made and I have straight hair and a ponytail so I don't know why it's so hard to actually cover and protect my head. I think they should make it an inch larger throughout the skull area.
