Review on StarTech Com Internal Multi Card Reader Support by Luis Neels

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Oops, bad quality. Found a much better card reader.

It's hard to find an integrated SD card reader with UHS-II speeds on an internal USB 3.0 port. This StarTech reader looked cheap and had some questionable reviews, but I gave it a try. On my Dell Optiplex 790, I plugged it into an optional Inateck PCIe to USB 3.0 2-port card into the internal 20-pin USB connector and was able to use the external StarTech USB 3.0 port, but I had no indicator light and I was able to do not read SD, CF or memory cards. I took the thing apart and looked closely at the cables and connections, but couldn't find the fault. Incidentally, the circuit board holding the card reader connectors is misaligned with the front panel, and the circuit board supports easily flex even further out of alignment with a little extra pressure when the card is inserted. I sent this thing back to Revain along with the StarTech 5.25 to 3.5 inch adapter. I finally found a much better quality UHS-II SD card reader at BH Video, an internal HP 15-in-1 USB 3.0 card reader that also supports CF and MS cards, and a quality adapter with 5, Contains 25 x 3.5 inches. The only drawback is the lack of a USB 3.0 port on the front. Connected to my USB 3.0 PCIe card's 20-pin adapter, works great the first time, like this.
