Review on EAI Education Yellow Plastic Base Ten Rods - Set Of 50 by David May

A Mixed Bag: My Experience with Yellow Base Ten Rods

I recently purchased EAI Education's Yellow Plastic Base Ten Rods set for my fourth-grade classroom. While the rods themselves are durable and provide a useful visual aid for students learning place value and addition/subtraction, I was disappointed with the color of the rods. The shade of yellow is very bright and almost distracting, which could be problematic for students with sensory issues. Additionally, the rods are a bit pricey for what they are, and there are other brands on the market that are more affordable and come in a wider range of colors. However, I will say that the rods are easy to clean and come in a sturdy storage container. They also provide a good amount of weight and heft, so students can physically feel the difference between one unit and ten units. Overall, I would recommend EAI Education's Yellow Plastic Base Ten Rods set if you are in dire need of place value manipulatives and are willing to spend a bit more money. However, if you have the luxury of choice, I would suggest looking into other options before making a final decision. -3 stars for Yellow Base Ten Rods-

Pros
  • Convenient set size: With a set of 50 rods, these base ten rods are the perfect size for use in small groups or individual instruction, and can be easily stored away when not in use
Cons
  • The Yellow Plastic Base Ten Rods set might not be useful for other subjects or activities other than math, making it less versatile
