I use this with a magic hand (11 inches) so a modification was needed. To keep the flash and arm from rotating when the camera orientation changes I had to use my own screw so it could be tightened with pliers. I also had to cut the rubber spacer so I could get metal to metal - once I had the rubber in place the arm turned metal to metal using pliers to create a torque worked Now the magic hand permanently attached to the bracket is necessary. Normally this setting is intended for macro photography of insects in the field. Please note that these changes would not have been necessary if I had used this strictly as intended. I'm glad the changes were necessary to allow me to do exactly what I need.
