Nice bag, could have been better, much better

This bag has a few good features, but it has enough frustratingly bad specs that I can't rate it higher. OK. This is a sturdy, well-made bag. The foam is stiff enough to offer more protection than I'm used to in a camera bag. Unfortunately, all the padding makes the bag a bit heavy. The interior of the bag is a large open space with just enough dividers to allow for a wide range of customization options. There are three ways to get in. I'm not sure I need that many options, but some might find them useful. The bag wears well, but the shoulder straps need extra padding. There is a small pocket on the hip belt for easy access to small items without having to remove the pack. I use it for GPS. For me, the best thing that most other backpacks don't have is the shoulder straps, which cover most of the outside of the pack. I often carry all sorts of extras that don't fit in my backpack, from an extra tripod to a flashlight stand to a foldable camp chair. The ability to attach items to the outside of the bag is a huge bonus for me (although anything attached to the outside affects how the bag is carried, so some restraint must be exercised). Now for the bad. Firstly, the detachable tripod bag is convenient because it can be attached to different places on the bag. Unfortunately, the bag is so small that only one leg fits in. This isn't a major flaw, but I would have preferred to be able to put at least two, and preferably all three, legs in it. As other reviewers have pointed out, the straps that come with the bag are very suspect. They are designed to easily attach to the webbing loops, but the construction feels flimsy and more likely to fail. I haven't had any issues yet, but I get nervous every time I use them and plan to replace them with a more robust design soon. There are a couple of internal pockets which are a good size in terms of space but they are so small that they are almost unusable. If you manage to squeeze in a few items, filters, batteries, etc., the bag will be very difficult to close and anything stored in the bags will be under too much pressure. An easy solution would be to make the pockets a little deeper to be really useful and then either make the inside of the pocket a little deeper to accommodate them or even just use slightly shorter baffles to make room. Likewise, there are two external pockets on the outside of the backpack, which seem big enough to be very handy, but again, they're very thin and barely usable. I don't know how many people need that much flat storage, but I'm not one of them. This pack has many seemingly nice features, but too many of them are barely functional. A few small tweaks and this pack will be great. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to its potential for me.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Not as good as it says
