These are the brightest LED candles I can find, just what I need. The flickering occurs electrically through a slight dimming over time, since with some other models it is assumed that you actually have a mechanically moving flame. I think this is made in such a way that you can switch between candle and light without complicated design. I love them because they make reading easier at night. Updated January 2019: I continue to use them daily and found an interesting feature, not sure if it was intentional. If you use the timer function to let them run for 2 hours and turn off by themselves, the candles will automatically turn on at the same time the next day and run for 2 hours. I really like how it works.
