Due to the facial recognition for the goofy face feature which i never had any intention to use it requires the latest devices only for the app, so put it this way if you were using an older device just fine for your old sphero it will probably now not be compatible with this new one just for a goofy feature you would probably not use anyways! I got this for my cats to play with only my mom's newer phone will work with the app none of the phones or tablets my cats use to play games on that do work with the original sphero will work with this mini. there is no reason why could not have altered the app to work with all devices even if it mean turning off some features to do so. Maybe 3rd party apps will support it on all devices one can hope. Also there are no instructions in the box only a thick legal notice. the only instruction printed on the box is to go to spheromini.sphero.com at the time of this writing there is NO webpage at this address!
