Review on Shure 55SH II Unidyne Microphone by Aaron Charlton

Sounds as good as it looks!

I used to have a Shure 55SH mic and while it looked stunning I was never satisfied with the sound. It doesn't matter how good a mic looks on stage, if it doesn't sound good it doesn't belong there, except as a prop. The blue foam of the Super 55 put me off at first, but then I got the idea of pairing it with light blue XLR mic cables and thought it would be a really 'distinctive' look and would be popular. What bothered me the most, of course, was the sound. I did a little research and was happy to read that the Super 55 is a supercardioid microphone based on the Beta 58a and I really like it. This mic looks and sounds great. It's bright and clear, with a great 'golden smudge', and handles low frequencies well too. This mic has been chided in some reviews for not handling plosive tones (b and p) well, but even when using it with open mic beginners I found this to be far from the case. Excellent pre-feedback gain allows this mic to be placed close to stage monitors and easily adjust gain. I love my Super 55!
