I bought these just before a long car trip because our two large thermal water bottles don't fit in any of the cup holders in the car and they always go with us and get hard when free. The container fits very well on the back of any car seat. I had to take out the waterproof inner bag because it made it difficult to slip the thermos flasks in and out easily, but since we didn't buy it as a garbage can for the car, it didn't matter. To make it easier to open, I attached a Velcro strip to the Velcro on the flap of the lid so the lid doesn't "snap" so to speak. It wasn't that hard to lift the lid to get the bottles out once the Velcro stopped snagging or sticking. (I'd even take the lid off, but it's a piece with the container.) I think it would work well as a car trash can, but for our purpose of holding two large thermoses, it suffices.
