Review on ๐Ÿ  Remington Solar 20-Watt Black Solar Attic Fan with Thermostat & Humidistat - Weather Resistant Vent Fan for Homes by Andrew Agarwal

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Requires really direct sunlight

My 50 year old house in Dallas, Texas has a flat attic with only gable vents for attic ventilation. When we moved in, there was passive attic ventilation on the roof, but when I noticed my wireless attic thermometer read 167 degrees in early summer, I knew I had to try something different. As a home inspector, I know that the best attic ventilation system is a combination of ceiling and ridge fans, but the cost (and experience) of installing them baffles me, and I knew I had to replace the old passive air vent with this vent 1. The ventilation grille was in my power. impact and price range. I highly recommend watching Remington's installation video. I had to widen the existing hole in my roof a bit, but overall the installation was pretty easy. Loosening the old shingles far enough on each side of the hole was the hardest part. I have to agree that the main disadvantage is that the solar panel has to be fully illuminated by direct sunlight. Without knowing much about solar panels, I can't tell if this is a bug common to Remington or all solar panel products, but even part of my hand covering the corner of the panel is enough to stop the fan completely. Passing clouds will definitely turn it off. I installed the roof on the south side where there is direct sunlight of about 10A-5P. How well it mitigates the heat in the attic, I didn't see my thermometer reading over 140 (which is still too hot for an attic), so I'm happy to drop 25+ degrees. I'll try increasing the ventilation area of the attic and see if more air moves because the fan size is too big for my square footage. Even considering the PSU REALLY as the temperatures at sunset are still over 110C. Today is the hottest day of the year so the real test is just beginning!

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other alternatives
