It's MUCH brighter at night than I expected. I put it in my bedroom and thought it would be nice to turn it on when I got up at night. No, that was a terrible idea! First, if you don't place it **properly** next to your bed, it won't sense your movement until you're halfway to the bathroom. Second, it's like a blindingly bright light when it suddenly appears. I literally had nightmares after using it just once! I bought two of these. I'll put one in the basement hallway and try to give the other one away.
