Review on Inferno Stove Top Thermometer (3-30) - Precision Temperature Measurement for Stove Tops by Christie Cox

Useful tool to help you burn fuel efficiently and safely

Purchased to replace a Rutland brand thermometer for a medium sized fireplace insert. I have 7 years of experience with this fireplace insert, so I've learned how to fire it better. The inferno appears to follow the rise and fall of temperature more gently than the rutland. Rutland temporarily held the temperature and then suddenly jumped 50-100 degrees in an instant. Thus, Inferno makes it easier to predict the evolution of the fire cycle. In my particular fireplace insert (Jotul Kennebec) with the inferno top front center, the best burns occur when the inferno is right on the border between "Best Zone" and "Too Hot" or even slightly hot. So rather than blindly following the temperature reading on a thermometer, in my experience it's more important to find out by trial and error how your particular insert or wood stove burns best, and then use a thermometer like this to keep it at that sweet spot, independent of the thermometer. In my case the best firing range of the Jotul insert on Rutland was at least 50 degrees lower than this Inferno product. But once I discovered it, this product is as useful as Rutland has ever been.
